Campus Safety

The Scholars School System is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all staff, students, and visitors. This duty of care is met through regular risk assessments, clear documentation, effective action planning and ongoing staff and student training. Health and safety are integral to our operations, featuring regularly on meeting agendas and within student reviews.

Fire Risk Assessment FRA is done on a yearly basis by an external Fire Marshal. A Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) is conducted to identify potential fire hazards and assess the risks they pose to individuals within a building or premises. It helps determine the adequacy of existing fire safety measures and recommends additional controls to prevent, control, or reduce the effects of a fire. Essentially, an FRA ensures a building is as safe as possible from fire and that people can escape easily in the event of a fire.

Health and safety consultation visits are conducted to involve employees in the process of identifying and managing workplace risks, ensuring a safer and healthier work environment. This proactive approach helps businesses comply with legal requirements, reduce accidents and ill-health, and improve overall productivity.

Fire alarm servicing is done to ensure the system is fully functional, compliant with regulations, and ready to protect lives and property in the event of a fire. Regular maintenance helps prevent false alarms, identifies potential faults, and ensures the system meets safety standards.

Emergency lights service is performed to ensure that the emergency lighting system is fully functional and compliant with safety regulations, which is crucial for safe evacuations during power outages or other emergencies. Regular servicing helps prevent potential hazards caused by faulty equipment and ensures a safe environment for building occupants.

Fire extinguisher service and maintenance are crucial to ensure the equipment functions correctly during a fire emergency. Regular servicing ensures extinguishers are in good working order, compliant with regulations, and ready to use when needed. It also helps identify and address potential issues like corrosion, leaks, or pressure loss before they become serious problems.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is done to ensure that electrical appliances are safe to use and minimize the risk of electrical hazards like electric shocks, fires, and other accidents. It involves both visual inspections and electronic tests to identify potential defects that may not be visible to the naked eye.

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) is done to ensure that lifting equipment is used safely and that lifting operations are planned, supervised, and executed safely. This is achieved by requiring thorough examinations of lifting equipment, proper planning of lifting operations, and ensuring that those involved are competent.

Fire drills are conducted to prepare people for a potential fire emergency, ensuring they know how to react safely and efficiently. These drills familiarize occupants with escape routes, emergency exits, and safety protocols, ultimately reducing panic and potential injuries during an actual fire.

A Water Dispenser Service is done to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and optimal performance of the water dispenser, preventing the buildup of bacteria, mineral deposits, and other contaminants. Regular servicing also helps maintain the quality and taste of the water and prolongs the lifespan of the dispenser.

Portable stretchers and emergency evacuation chairs are checked every six months to ensure they are in optimal working condition and ready for use in an emergency. This maintenance schedule is crucial for compliance with safety regulations, particularly PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations), and to prevent potential malfunctions during evacuations. Regular inspections help identify and address any defects or issues, ensuring the equipment functions reliably when needed.

First aid boxes are checked to ensure they contain all necessary, undamaged, and in-date supplies, ready for use in emergencies. Regular checks prevent outdated or depleted items from hindering effective first aid, and also help manage costs by preventing last-minute purchases.

Fire alarm systems are tested weekly to ensure they are functioning correctly and to identify any potential faults before they become a safety hazard. Weekly testing helps verify the system's ability to detect a fire, activate the alarm, and communicate with the monitoring service, if applicable. It also ensures that the alarm is audible throughout the building.

Fire extinguishers are checked weekly to ensure they are readily available, in good condition, and fully functional in case of a fire. Regular weekly checks help identify potential issues like low pressure, damage, or tampering, preventing them from becoming major problems during an actual emergency.
