This course is designed to motivate, encourage and support those who want to foster personal growth while equipping themselves with the skills and knowledge needed to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and families in their communities. The programme empowers you to build not only the skills and knowledge relevant to the 21st century workplace environment, but inspires you to grow and succeed by opening new opportunities and laying the foundation for a brighter future

Course Overview

This BA (Hons) Community, Youth and Families programme will be delivered in partnership with Plymouth Marjon University.

The programme supports employees and employers within the youth and community work sector. It has been developed in consultation with stakeholders, and the curriculum is aligned with current and emerging workforce needs. It features co-delivered specialist modules led by experts from local organisations, which further strengthens community partnerships and ensuring real-world relevance.

The course has been designed to enable you achieve your best possible results through an extended academic year of three terms. This format allows for a more balanced delivery of modules, pacing of assessments and learning, which supports steady skills development without feeling overwhelmed. Over the three years, you will be required to participate in three experiential placements to help build your on-the-job skills. These will be a mix of individual and group experiences, co-designed with each cohort and tailored to available opportunities.

BA (Hons) Community, Youth and Families degree at SSS includes a number of strategies designed to develop professional, high-quality graduates for the communities, youth, and families sector:

  • You will be supported by experienced highly qualified lecturers with knowledge across the communities, youth, and families sector.
  • Gain professional experience by completing professional work placements in settings that reflect new and exciting roles in the sector. 
  • Your modules will be focused on a range of skills and knowledge that can be directly applied to working within the communities, youth, and families sector. 
  • Develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed by employers to deliver the holistic personal, social and educational development to youth, families and communities.
  • Develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed by employers to provide services such as needs assessment, advocacy, safeguarding, referrals to other services, and emotional and practical support to youth, families and communities.

The primary focus of this programme is the development of skillful community, youth and family workers. Work with Communities, Youth and Families is a distinctive body of practice held together by a commitment to a set of shared values: participation, inclusion, empowerment, partnership and learning. The Community, Youth and Families programme is routed in a community development tradition, which is distinct from social work and formal education pedagogies and practice. The task of community, youth and family work is to plan, provide, manage and evaluate appropriate experiences of learning, challenge and reflection through working in a way that aims for social justice and community-led transformation.

The course has a design to help students achieve their best possible results, with an extended academic year of three terms, enabling modules to be taught in a way that paces the assessment and learning load, and allowing students to develop skills without feeling overwhelmed.

The module details given below for the Community Youth and Families programme are subject to change and are the latest example of the curriculum available in this course of study. Students will study core modules across their three years of study. 

Year 1

Core modules (students are required to take):

  • Engaging with Learning: Youth & Community Work (20 credits)
  • Intro to YCW: Principles and practices (20 credits)
  • Interpersonal communication and relationship skills (20 credits)
  • Experiential Placement 1 (20 credits)
  • Diversity, inclusion and social justice (20 credits)
  • Issues and Interventions (20 credits)

Year 2

Core modules (students are required to take):

  • Policy & Practice (20 credits)
  • Developing and leading projects (20 credits)
  • Youth & Community Practice in the Digital World (20 credits)
  • Practitioner Research (20 credits)
  • Experiential Placement 2 (20 credits)
  • Families, friends and communities (20 credits)

Year 3

Core modules (students are required to take):

  • Organising, Leading & Managing Practice (20 credits)
  • Working in and with communities (20 credits)
  • Changing Practice: contemporary controversies and dilemmas (20 credits)
  • Experiential Placement 3 (20 credits)
  • My Professional Identity (20 credits)
  • Practitioner research report, aimed at publication (20 credits)

The BA (Hons) Community, Youth and Families programme utilises a range of learning and teaching approaches is utilised on the programme to enable flexible, student-centred learning. Considerable emphasis is placed on critical enquiry and dialogue to model the practice students employ in their community, youth and families work practice. The teaching team is committed to engaging with and developing further new approaches to teaching and learning, including the full and active use of the VLE, the use of open learning resources and audio capture of lectures where appropriate. Emphasis is placed on working in small groups, starting from strengths and encouraging active participation. We aim to develop approaches to learning that will support reflection and analysis, aiding the application of theory to practice and developing a critical awareness of the multi-dimensional influences on working with communities, young people and families.

The BA (Hons) Community, Youth and Families programme integrates a range of assessment methods in recognition of the impact assessment has on student learning and approaches to learning. The teaching team is committed to engaging with the emerging innovations in assessment, particularly in relation to recognising and valuing the variety of learning styles within any given cohort and the importance of taking into account students’ academic and professional learning needs. Consideration is given to the development of particular key skills which may be developed through assessment, for example presentation skills and collaborative working skills. There is a mixture of controlled (e.g. presentation) and open assessment (e.g. essays or assignments) at all levels.

  • Three A-levels at grades CCD or above
    Or BTEC triple grades MMP or above
    Or Access 3-36 D/M with min 3D 
  • And GCSE English Language at grade 4 or grade C or above.  
  • For applicants with an ECHP or legacy statement, the minimum requirement is Entry L3. 
  • A DBS check and an interview is required.  We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and students. All students are expected to share this commitment and demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct. 
  • Applicants should have some practical experience of communities, youth or family work prior to commencement of the course. 

UK & EU Students (with settled status):

  • Tuition fees cost £9,535 a year for this course in 2025/2026.
  • Depending on government policy, tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years.
  • Living costs, e.g.travel, food, will also need to be taken into consideration.

When you apply for your student loan you will need to supply the correct UCAS code for your course of study. This code will depend on your study location, course, and start date.

The contemporary curriculum of the BA (Hons) Communities, Youth, and Families will prepare you for a rewarding career in roles such as youth worker, social worker, family support worker, community development worker, opportunities in the youth justice system as a probation officer, as well as positions in the education sector like teaching assistant or learning mentor.

Through structured placements and meaningful work experience, graduates will be well-positioned to progress into leadership roles such as Team Leader or Service Manager, where they can apply their skills, drive change, and contribute to service excellence.

Postgraduate study in related fields like childhood and youth studies can open doors to specialised roles, including education, social services, or advanced policy work.
